Democratic Governance

April 16-23 – 30 young people from all seven provinces participated in an eight-day youth camp in "Ak-Tash" guest house, Chui province. The camp was titled "Unity and harmony - a pledge of peace!" and aimed at improving capacity of youth in conflict resolution in their communities and disseminate the knowledge among their peers in the regions. Camp participants also discussed a contingency plan during organization of elections in the country under the project "Infrastructure for the peace - political dialogue and preventive actions". They also learned about mechanisms of interaction between NGOs, government structure and international organizations in conflict situations and during peace building activities. Jalal-Abad, Kyrgyzstan (May 6, 2012) - “It was a great opportunity to get to know some very friendly and welcoming people who work in these communities and projects we had the chance to visit”, stated Mikko Kinnunen, the Finnish Ambassador to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan on a joined visit with Alexander Avanessov, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Kyrgyzstan. Mr. Avanessov and Mr. Kinnunen visited UNDP, WFP and UNICEF projects in and around Jalal-Abad on Sunday, 6th of May, as well as met with some members of the Oblast Advisory Committee to hear about their work.

Democratic Governance

On March 15 – A round table to discuss and analyze national experience of strategy development in Kyrgyzstan was organized with support of the EU-UNDP New Legal Framework Project in partnership with the Center of social technologies. Participants of the round table discussed the positive and negative experience of strategic planning in Kyrgyzstan. Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (April 19, 2012) – From 10 to 14 April 2012 the UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic Alexander Avanessov held several meetings with partners and international organizations in Moscow. At the talks and consultations parties discussed further development of cooperation with the UN system and UNDP in the Kyrgyz Republic, with a focus on problems of uranium tailings.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (April 18, 2012) - Today in the Ministry of Economy and Antitrust Policy of the Kyrgyz Republic an inception workshop starts on the macro-and micro-simulation to assess development support measures and strategies. The workshop was organized by UNDP jointly with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA/DPAD) in an effort to strengthen the analytical capacity of staff of relevant ministries. During the current year it is planned to hold four workshops for professionals of ministries to introduce to basics of integrated macro and micro simulation.

Democratic Governance 

February 4 – EU-UNDP new legal framework project assisted in organization of a round table in Osh for discussion of the draft law “On Osh city”. Discussion of the bill was initiated by a team of the Parliament Committee on constitutional legislation, state system and local governance. The bill was developed to align it with the new Constitutional provisions and strengthen the role and independence of local governance. The draft law was presented by a member of the team Mr. Tekebaev, mayor of Osh city Mr. Myrzakmatov and by other participants. Deputies of Osh local council, representatives of Osh Mayor’s office, local NGOs and experts provided comments issues of Osh city governance, problems in interaction of local governance with central ministries and agencies, indicated pros and cons draft law and proposed many valuable recommendations. Learn more from Gulmira Mamatkerimova, project manager (gm@dgov.undp.kg).

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (March 26, 2012) – One month long campaign dedicated to the World TB Day was launched in all regions of the country. The Grants Implementation Unit of the Global Fund grants / UNDP, together with partner organizations (Ministry of Health of KR, MH NTSF, Project HOPE, USAID, ICRC) have implemented an information campaign under the slogan "Stop TB, while I'm alive!".

For too long, tuberculosis has not received sufficient attention. The result of this neglect is needless suffering: in 2010 alone, nearly 9 million people fell ill with TB and 1.4 million died, with 95 per cent of these deaths occurring in developing countries. These numbers make tuberculosis the second top infectious killer of adults worldwide.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (16 March 2012) – On March 16, 2012 in Ministry of Economy and Antimonopoly Policy of the Kyrgyz Republic the First Programme Board meeting of the UNDP/UNEP Poverty and Environment Initiative was held.  The Committee includes representatives of the strategic ministries and agencies in the sphere of economic and finance, social development, agriculture and environment, and civil society.  The meeting was aimed at discussion of the activities on mainstreaming of poverty and environment issues into strategic plans of the Kyrgyz republic and establishment of working group for integration of environmental priorities and poverty reduction issues into national, sectoral and local development plans.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (March 13, 2012) – First Vice Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Aaly Karashev met with UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic Alexander Avanessov.

During the meeting parties exchanged views on priorities of cooperation between the Kyrgyzstan, UN system and UNDP within the new programme cycle of 2012-2016.
