The programme aims to contribute to the development of the national capacity to identify, understand and peacefully respond to conflicts and their root causes. The Programme does this by assisting in strengthening structures, systems and strategies which support peace; and by increasing awareness of diversity and improving tolerance and cooperation among and between groups in Kyrgyzstan and border areas. UNDP also continues to work to address the root causes of conflict e.g. social inequality, discrimination, weak government institutions, nascent civil society, border problems, resource issues, etc. The new UNDP Programme, which began in May 2007, is being implemented nationwide, in a phased approach, over the next four years.
